The search for ones ancestors is a long and involved endeavor. There are many factors that must be considered and, most often, included to do a search in order to narrow down the many fields available throughout the realms of geneology. One of the most important factors is that of ones Name, primarily, the Surname, or your last name. In many cases they are often spelled and pronounced differently than one may think.
There is a story, which comes to mind, of two brothers who enlisted in the Army during WWI. Each of these brothers were inducted by two different people who in turn spelt their names differently. Their name was: "Bouge" the original spelling...the other way it was written was "Bogue". At this time the name was pronounced like: 'Boeg', yet, its true pronounciation was like: 'Boo-jay'. The name is French in origin. So you see, to this day, even though these are brothers, their blood-right families evolved with two different spellings and thus their children will have some difficulty reconnecting their two families as one.
To begin ones search you must keep in mind that family records throughout the centuries have followed the path of ones Father. These records were not always accurate insofar as dates and occurances. It is for these reasons that you must develop the 'habit' of cross-referencing everything as one of your most important and vital tools in research. Remember to keep many notes, and we do mean many notes, about everything you find along the way.

On another note, and according to Webster's, there are two different ways of spelling Geneology or Genealogy. It's really up to you, or your choice.
